The energy price cap rose by 4 per cent on 1st October to £1,723 a year for a typical household paying by direct debit, the highest level in three years. Ofgem will confirm the January figure by 25th November, and forecasters expect another rise, with several putting the typical annual bill at or above £2,000. VAT has been removed from household electricity until the end of March 2027, which softens the electricity side of the bill but leaves gas heating untouched.
If you are on a standard variable tariff, compare fixed deals before the January announcement. Whatever you pay per unit, the cheapest unit of energy is the one that never leaves your home. These ten fixes cost little and work from the day you fit them.
