Joseph Howse

Author

Joseph Howse is a Canadian novelist born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the author of the Next Year's Snow series: The Girl in the Water (2022) and The Circus and the Atom (2025), which won World Literature and Audiobook Fiction at the 2026 NYC Big Book Award. Both novels are narrated in audio by Annette Chown and the first has been translated into French as Submergée. He holds four degrees from Dalhousie University, runs the computer vision company Nummist Media Corporation and has written several technical books on OpenCV for Packt Publishing. He lives in a fishing village on the Nova Scotia coast.

The Nova Scotia author's second book, set in Kiev over the New Year of 1988 into 1989, also took a Distinguished Favorite for its cover, while his debut The Girl in the Water was honoured for its audiobook. The Next Year's Snow series has now sold to more than 80 public library systems in seven countries.
