Less is More: Your Wardrobe This Autumn

Most autumn wardrobe advice tells you what to buy. The far more useful question is what to do with what you already own, since a badly organised wardrobe can make even a good collection of clothes feel like you have nothing to wear.

Most autumn wardrobe advice tells you what to buy. Few people tell you what to do with what you already own, and that is the more useful question by some distance. A wardrobe with fifty good pieces arranged so that you cannot find any of them functions worse than a wardrobe with twenty pieces you can actually see. The problem most people have every September is not a shortage of clothes. It is a storage system that was never designed for the switch between seasons in the first place.

Start with the swap, not the sort

The instinct is to pull everything out and reorganise from scratch. Resist it. Start with the seasonal swap alone, moving summer pieces into storage and bringing autumn ones back into reach, before you make a single decision about what stays and what goes. Trying to declutter and rotate at the same time turns a two hour task into a weekend you will abandon halfway through. Get the right clothes physically in front of you first. The editing decisions are much easier once you are only looking at what is actually relevant to the next six months.
