After Ann’s death, her daughter Anna Jarvis picked up the mantle. Her relentless advocacy led to the first official Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908, in West Virginia, and by 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, a national holiday in the United States.

Anna Jarvis’s intention for Mother’s Day was a heartfelt, personal celebration of mothers.
