On Saturday 31st October, millions of people will pay to be frightened. They will queue for haunted houses, watch horror films with the lights off and walk home faster than usual. Halloween grew out of Samhain, the Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of the dark half of the year, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin. The modern version keeps the shiver and removes the danger.

When visitors to a haunted attraction were tested before and after their visit, many left in a better mood than when they arrived. A fright you choose, in a place you know is safe, gives your body the full rush of adrenaline with none of the cost. Once the scare passes, the relief feels like a reward.

The fears that shape your life work differently. Nobody queues for them. They show up as the email you have drafted four times and not sent, the price you have not raised, the conversation you keep postponing and the project you started years ago and never finished. Those fears rarely protect you from danger. More often, they stand guard over the things you care about most.
