Where can I actually move to build a better life. That is the question, in some version of those words, that Gallup found 21 per cent of adults worldwide had already asked themselves seriously enough to say yes to a pollster in 2024. By last year the figure had climbed to 40 per cent among women under 45. You are not the only one lying awake with a map in your head. You are one of a genuinely enormous number of people currently doing the same arithmetic, in the same order, and reaching the same second question almost immediately after the first. What will it actually cost me to get there.

Prince Harry answered a version of both questions this year, and the answer he arrived at was to come home. He and his family are leaving the life they built in California to return to Britain, six years after leaving it. Six years is not a small amount of time, and the America he is returning from is not the same country he moved to. Whatever his private reasons, the timing lands inside a wider story that has nothing to do with him personally. Record numbers of Americans are asking their own version of his question this year, and a growing number of them are answering it the same way he did, by looking for the door.

The return most people never hear about
