Close your eyes for a moment and picture the people who shaped your life. Some of them come back in surprising detail: the smell of your grandmother's kitchen on a Sunday, the teacher who kept you behind after class to tell you your essay was good, the boss who shut the door, sat down opposite you and said, 'Take the week off. We will manage.'

Some of them you have not seen for years, and you still hear their voices in ordinary moments. You catch yourself using a phrase your father always used, folding towels the way your mother folded them or opening the door to a stranger with the same warmth your aunt showed everyone who knocked.

Most of them never knew how much they changed you. The neighbour who walked you home on the night you heard the worst news of your life did not think of it as a legacy. The friend who answered the phone at three in the morning, listened for an hour and said very little did what she would have done for anyone. You have carried those moments with you for years.
