Every week, someone promises you a fortune from an online business you can run from your laptop. The reality is harsher. Online markets are crowded, algorithms change overnight and a lost connection can stop your income in its tracks. Meanwhile, some of the steadiest small businesses in Britain have never needed Wi-Fi at all. Their customers want something done in person, at their door, in their garden or on their high street, and no app can do it for them.

Before you choose, start with the honest numbers. According to the Office for National Statistics, 93.4% of UK businesses born in 2023 survived their first year. But only 38.4% of businesses born in 2019 were still active five years later. In other words, about six in ten new businesses close within five years. 1. Domestic cleaning: steady, repeat income from regular clients

Cleaning is one of the easiest businesses to start and one of the hardest to replace with technology. Most self-employed cleaners in the UK charge between £15 and £20 an hour in 2026, while cleaning companies typically charge £20 to £30, which covers insurance, vetted staff and cover for sickness. Rates run higher in London and the South East.

The arithmetic is simple, and it is worth doing before you start. If you clean for 25 paid hours a week at £18 an hour, for 46 working weeks a year, you would turn over £20,700. From that you pay your travel, cleaning products, insurance and tax. Your profit depends on keeping your diary full and your travel short, so build your round in one neighbourhood.

What it takes: public liability insurance, reliable transport and a reputation for trustworthiness. Many clients will ask whether you hold a DBS check, so consider getting one.

2. Window cleaning: a round you can build street by street

Window cleaning is a classic round-based business. Regular customers book every four to eight weeks, and once you have a full round, the work comes back to you. Guide prices show external window cleaning costing customers between £12 and £55 per visit depending on property size, with London at £20 to £70. Window cleaners who charge by time quote between £25 and £40 an hour.

What it takes: insurance is essential for anyone working at height, and many window cleaners now use water-fed pole systems that let them clean upper windows from the ground, which is safer and faster than ladders. Equipment is the main start-up cost.

3. Gardening: seasonal, physical and in high demand

Gardening rewards people who enjoy working outdoors and do not mind the weather. Rates vary widely by source and service. Guide prices put a gardener's hourly rate at around £25 to £45 across most of the UK in 2026, rising to £35 to £60 in London, while simpler tasks such as weeding sit lower. Landscape gardeners can charge £200 to £400 per person per day.

What it takes: tools, a vehicle that can carry them, public liability insurance and a waste carrier registration if you take garden waste away. Expect fewer bookings in winter, and plan for them by offering hedge trimming, clearance and planting work.

4. Dog walking: low cost to start, high trust to keep

Dog walking needs little equipment and serves a huge market. Around 28% of UK households own at least one dog. Single-dog walks are most commonly priced at £15 to £25 an hour, and most dog walkers launch for under £500, rising to around £1,000 if they invest in a vehicle or branding.

What it takes: specialist dog walking insurance, a clear agreement with each owner and great care. Some councils limit how many dogs one person can walk at a time in public spaces, so check your local rules before you set your group sizes.

5. Skilled trades: the highest earnings, with the longest training

Plumbers, electricians, plasterers, carpenters and decorators run some of the most resilient offline businesses in Britain. Their work cannot be done remotely, and demand returns every time a boiler fails or a home is sold. Earnings can be the highest on this list, but so is the barrier to entry.

What it takes: proper training and, in some trades, a legal licence to work. Anyone who works on gas appliances in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register. Electricians usually join a recognised competent person scheme so they can certify their work. If you are not yet qualified, a handyman business offering smaller repairs and assembly can be a stepping stone while you train.

6. A market food stall: the high street business with low overheads

A food stall at a local market lets you test a business idea for a fraction of the cost of opening a café. You pay a pitch fee rather than rent, and you learn quickly what customers will buy.

What it takes: you must register your food business with your local council at least 28 days before you start trading, and you will need food hygiene training, insurance and a street trading or market licence where required. Margins depend on what you sell and how much you waste, so start with a short menu and price every dish against its ingredient cost.

The businesses that survive tend to do the same few things well. They keep their start-up costs low and avoid debt in the first year. They build repeat customers rather than chasing one-off jobs. None of these ideas will make you rich overnight, and the survival figures show that no business is a sure thing.
